Al Jolson on the Radio

Al Jolson's radio career began at the dawn of the medium, and continued through broadcasts made just weeks before his death. Although recordings do not exist for a sizeable number of his broadcast work, there are a significant number of radio transcriptions extant from this body of work. On this page, you can select recordings from programs in which Al Jolson was the star, as well as programs where he was the guest, or special broadcasts where he was featured.
The Shell Chateau
Dating from the mid-1930s, this is the oldest regular series starring Al Jolson in the collection. Of the 39 known broadcasts, there are recordings for 14 of the programs. Audio quality varies; the shows are one hour in length with commercials, and the guest stars are people that continue to be known today, and others who are not so well known.

The Lifebuoy Program
Dating from the late 1930s, and going through some name changes along the way, this was Al Jolson's longest running program, with 99 programs broadcast during that time. Unfortunately, only 15 full and partial broadcasts remain at this time. These are fascinating shows, with a wide span of guests and songs, with overall good audio quality.

The Colgate Program
Dating from late 1942 through June, 1943, this broadcast, in some ways, set the stage for the Kraft Music Hall, some four years later. Only a few of the 39 broadcasts exist in recorded media; they contain some wonderful guests and stirring songs, well worth adding to your collection.

The Kraft Music Hall
Dating from the autumn of 1947 through the spring of 1949, this program may represent the peak of Al Jolson's new found fame, in late life. Accompanied by pianist and wit Oscar Levant, these 71 programs contain wonderful song, comedy, and entertainment; the best of Al Jolson just a short time before he passed away.

There are additional CDs with programs from many guest and special appearances. This information is being coded, and will be posted to the website as soon as possible. Please stay tuned, and ask the Audio Director if you have any specific show that you are seeking.

These CDs may also be ordered by mail.
