|The Man|Jolson Journey
Living in the Washington, DC, area during the last years of the Spanish-American War, Al Jolson and his brother Harry, who had been performing as singing waiters on Potomac excursion boats, performed for the soldiers at Fort Meyer, among other military camps in the Capitol area. Al even accompanied the Middletown, Pennsylvania, volunteers back to their home town, as their "mascot." This was, indeed, Al's earliest performance for what became his favorite audience.
