Donating to the Society
Preserving the legacy
of Al Jolson

Since 1950, the International Al Jolson Society, Inc., has worked to preserve the legend and the legacy of Al Jolson. Many have supported our efforts through the years, both by working within the organization to produce the worldwide network that we now have, and by contributing funds to enable our growth. Now, the Society is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. That means that may be able to deduct the value of the donation on your income taxes. Your should consult your tax advisor as to how this affects you, personally.

In addition to offering a donation now, you also may considering including the International Al Jolson Society, Inc., in your estate. Again, consult your tax advisor or estate planner for the details; such a gift can provide lasting evidence of your appreciation for Al Jolson and his legacy.

And then there is your collection. Through the years, many fans of Al Jolson amass a marvelous and often eclectic collection of recordings, sheet music, books, and other memorabilia of the World's Greatest Entertainer. These collections serve as entertainment, education, and often preserved memories for the owners. While some may have only a few of the Decca LPs, other may include original 78 RPM recordings, some over 100 years old, rare ephemera, and other oddities.

Whether through the need to downsize, or having to face the difficult task of dealing with the collection of a deceased loved one, the International Al Jolson Society, Inc., is often approached about the possibility of receiving all or part of a collection, or one’s leaving material to the Society as a legacy. While we are certainly interested in preserving Jolson material, which so often has found its way into dumpsters and landfills, there are some considerations in this matter.

We are often asked just how much materials in a collection are worth. It is difficult to get a sense for just what these items are worth by looking on the Internet; the same century old record has been listed for $99 and for $5. It rarely sells for the higher amount. Quite frankly, a good number, perhaps a majority, of listed prices for items on auction sites are more than the item is really worth. Ultimately, you and your tax advisor will come to a reasonable valuation.

If you would like to donate the material to the Society, to help insure that those who enjoy the material will continue to treasure items from the collection, we will try to help. Contact the International Al Jolson Society, Inc., at the address below, and we will see if there is someone in your area that can help facilitate the action. While we are based in the USA, we do have members throughout the world who can assist with this noble task. Although a collection may not remain intact as received, the parts will find homes with individuals who appreciate the legacy of Al Jolson.
