Al Jolson Home Page|His Works|Radio|03 May 50 Crosby Program

Al Jolson's experience with radio began in the dawn of the medium, and continued until the birth of television, and his death. He started the Kraft Music Hall, along with programs for Lifebuoy Soap, Colgate Tooth Powder, and Chevrolet, and died while waiting to go on to Bing Crosby's Chesterfield program. Here is another full length radio program for your enjoyment.

After a unique opener, Ken Carpenter introduced this edition of the Bing Crosby Chesterfield, with guest stars Ella Fitzgerald and Al Jolson. This show was broadcast from New York, and was, for Jolson, a return to the town that made him the King. With a tip of the hat to the coming television revolution, Crosby opened the show with a song from his latest picture, "The Horse Told Me."

Next up, the beauty of smoking Chesterfield cigarettes is promoted by Ken Carpenter.

Ella Fitzgerald took her turn on the show next, with a lovely rendition of "I Hadn't Anyone 'Till You." The audience loved her, and Crosby responded with a duet of "Stay With The Happy People."

Introduced as The World's Greatest Entertainer, singing to the World's Greatest Street, Al Jolson entered the broadcast, singing "Give My Regards To Broadway."

There are enough blown lines in the banter to choke a horse, on this Kentucy Derby Day broadcast, with comments about the Jolson Fan Club, Jolson's new mustache, television and Milton Berle. Jolie even got in a few digs on himself.

Although they said they were going to sing a couple of hundred songs, the time left in the show hardly allowed that. So, see how you can appreciate Jolson and Crosby in duet singing "Ma Blushin' Rosie" and "Avalon" for starters.

From Avalon on Catalina Island, the boys jumped east, to the city of record, to next join voices in "Lullaby of Broadway."

After the singing, an alphabetic Chesterfield commercial, with a flub by Crosby, himself, for good measure.

Marking the coming running of the Kentucky Derby, the closing song of the show once again joins the voices of Bing Crosby and Al Jolson, as they sing the Stephen Foster classic, "My Old Kentucky Home."
