Al Jolson Home Page|His Works|Radio|14 Oct 48 KMH with Ezio Pinza

Al Jolson's experience with radio began in the dawn of the medium, and continued until the birth of television, and his death. He started the Kraft Music Hall, along with programs for Lifebuoy Soap, Colgate Tooth Powder, and Chevrolet, and died while waiting to go on to Bing Crosby's Chesterfield program. Here is another full length radio program for your enjoyment.

Ezio Pinza and Al Jolson
Ezio Pinza and Al Jolson
This program was originally broadcast on Thursday, October 14, 1948. Al Jolson welcomed back opera star Ezio Pinza as the week's guest star.

After a brief political barb, Al Jolson opened this program with a great rendition of "It Was Just One Of Those Things."

Ken Carpenter and Al Jolson then engaged in some verbal fencing, following which Jolie turned to Oscar Levant. Mr. Levant played one of his Kraft Music Hall favorites, the Grieg Concerto.

After Ken Carpenter's words for Kraft, Jolson discussed the preparations for his second bio-pic, Jolson Sings Again. Then, Oscar and Al take a musical journey, with a variety of favorite tunes. There are some favorites, and even a spread of parody! The segment concludes with a hot version of "After You've Gone."

Another few words for Velveeta introduced the segment with Ezio Pinza, who then joined the show, and showed us just what an operatic voice could do. And then... how about the Pinza-Jolson Opera Company?

After their merging of voices, Al Jolson sang a song he called "one of the finest songs I've ever had the pleasure to sing," "We'll Just Be The Same Old Friends."
