Al Jolson Home Page|His Works|Radio|07 Oct 48 KMH with E G Robinson

Al Jolson's experience with radio began in the dawn of the medium, and continued until the birth of television, and his death. He started the Kraft Music Hall, along with programs for Lifebuoy Soap, Colgate Tooth Powder, and Chevrolet, and died while waiting to go on to Bing Crosby's Chesterfield program. Here is another full length radio program for your enjoyment.

E G Robinson and Al Jolson
E G Robinson and Al Jolson
This program was originally broadcast on Thursday, October 7, 1948. The guest star was that wonderful movie star, Edward G. Robinson.

Al Jolson opened this program with a great rendition of "Baby Face."

Following the usual opening banter, Oscar Levant then showed his mastery of a Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto.

After Ken Carpenter's words for Kraft, Jolson performed a full orchestral version of "A Tree In The Meadow." After that, Al and Oscar joined together in a routine we'll just call "Little Asa's Life In Music." Just listen and enjoy! The bit concludes with a hot version of "Chinatown, My Chinatown," just like in Jolson Sings Again, with Milton DeLugg on accordion.

In Our House

After a glorious Velveeta commercial, Edward G. Robinson joins the program. Often a gangster in the movies, Eddie plays the "tough Eddie" character for Jolie.

After a final Kraft commercial, Al Jolson sang a song he called an expression of his love for his family and home. The song was "In Our House." Jolie even gave a tease for next week's guest, Ezio Pinza. Don't miss it!
