Al Jolson Home Page|Now Showing|Memorializers|Jolson's Contest
This little segment, taken from the Barry Gray interview from October, 1946, is notable for two things.

First, it has often been said, and I have received a number of Emails stating, that Al Jolson was never called "Jolie" in his life; that the nickname was applied after his death, and should not be used. Listen closely to the first word of this cut, where the question is posed to him with the exclamation, "Jolie!"

The other, of course, is the story, itself. Every Jolson fan likes to sing along, often believing one could sound as good as Jolson, himself. Well, listen to Jolson's recollection of entering a Jolson Sound-Alike contest, with the unexpected results.

Here's Jolson's story about the contest you wish you could have seen!
